Untitled (shaved) is a portrait of a friend who lost her hair during chemotherapy treatment for cancer. This drawing evokes the disease, the associated suffering, the notion of death, and the fragility and resilience of the human body. The black circle in which the head is framed calls to mind medical illustrations, microscopic preparations, views of the organism, as well as the notions of intimacy and secrecy.
Biographical note
Sophie Jodoin vit et travaille à Montréal. Elle a étudié les arts visuels à l’Université Concordia. Elle privilégie le dessin, le collage, la peinture et la vidéo. Ses expositions solos et collectives récentes ont été présentées au Volta NY, au Musée d’art de Joliette, à la Richmond Public Art Gallery, au London Museum, à l’Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, à la Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery (Halifax), aux centres CLARK et OBORO, à la Battat Contemporary et chez Bertrand Grimont (Paris). Ses œuvres font partie de plusieurs collections privées et publiques, dont celles du MNBAQ, de la Banque Nationale et de l’Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
