In Greek mythology, in punishment for having defied the gods, Sisyphus was condemned to endlessly roll a huge boulder up a hill, an impossible task as the boulder was enchanted to roll down before ever reaching the top.
Sisyphe is part of a series of animated lenticular prints depicting an individual performing a simple act. Comprising a sequence of eight drawings interlaced and printed on lenticular plastic, the subject of the work moves depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
Biographical note
Jonathan Plante est né en 1976. Il vit à Montréal. Il étudie la question de la présence par l’exploration des différents états de l’image. La photographie, la sculpture, l’animation et le dessin ont fait jusqu’à maintenant partie intégrante de sa pratique artistique. L’animation image par image lui permet de naviguer entre ces disciplines et d’étudier les transformations de l’image en mouvement. Il aborde la perception visuelle à l’aide de jeux optiques. Ses œuvres font partie de nombreuses collections privées et publiques, dont celles du Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal et du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
