Encre sur papier, 2020
In the series "On célèbre nos petites victoires", Aimé Mbuy was interested in a wax print manufactured mainly in the Netherlands. The country dominates the textile market of the African continent, at the expense of traditional fabrics "Made in Africa".
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the artist is from, the fabric is mainly used to support the political propaganda of the leaders. Indeed, politicians always appear in a dominating or even dictatorial posture. The pagne is never used to glorify the people but rather to buy their votes during election campaigns.
For this series, Aimé Mbuyi decided to use and subvert the codes and language of the "African" wax to finally represent the people. To do so, he created his own print for the loincloth using the technique of wood engraving.
