Oil painting on canvas, 2021
Trevor Bourke’s practice is primarily focused on the transcendence of images as subjects. Working through numerous collages and digital manipulations, his paintings are of neurotic and unreliable narration, culminating into instances of imminence. This process allows him to explore images in a cinematic fashion, as he relies on semiotic cues to determine a direction or subject. His work transpires his eagerness to engage, and perhaps even react, with visual history. As we are today overwhelmed by the staggering amount of images, Bourke navigates visual media as a builder, configuring space and colour, prompting us to consider our relationship to painting today.
